19 year old woman arrested for impersonating medical doctor

Lilongwe: Police in Lilongwe have arrested 19 year old woman for impersonating a medical personnel at Bwaila Hospital, contrary to section 389 of the penal code.

Malawi News Agency (Mana) has established that the young woman identified as Eunice Moyo on Thursday had a stethoscope around her neck and was moving around in one of the wards acting like a medical practitioner of the hospital which raised suspicions on one of the staff member.

The issue was reported to the Principal Administrator of the hospital who immediately went to ask the suspect as whom she really was and what she was doing at the hospital.

The suspect initially identified herself as Tiwonge Sibande from Kamuzu College of Nursing but failed to provide any identification when asked to do so.

The woman was arrested and subsequent investigations revealed that the name she had provided was somebody else’s name and that her true name is Eunice Moyo, Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula told Malawi News Agency (Mana).

He said investigations are still underway to establish exactly what the suspect’s intentions were and would appear in court to answer charges of impersonating a public worker once investigations are over.

The suspect hails from Chiwavi village, Traditional Authority (TA) Mabulabo in Mzimba district.

Dandaula has denounced the development and has urged hospital personnel across the country to be on the lookout for such devious people saying they can put lives of patients at risk.

Previously, similar arrests have also been made at Bwaila, Kamuzu Central Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.
