Phalombe, Police in Phalombe are keeping in custody Steven Nampinga, 23, for allegedly stabbing his friend to death at a drinking joint in the district.
The deceased, identified as Wyson Mbalule 31, hailed from Mangoza Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Mkhumba in the district and died while on transit to the hospital.
In an interview with MANA, Phalombe Police Publicist, Augustus Nkhwazi said the dual went to a drinking joint on Saturday and were enjoying the beer together, but from the blues, disagreements erupted which escalated into a fierce fight between them.
He said before the fight, Nampinga decided to walk away on Mbalule but the deceased stopped him and unleashed blows on his opponent.
Nkhwazi said as the fight progressed, the deceased produced a knife with which he wanted to stab the Nampinga but Nampinga overpowered the deceased and snatched the knife and used the same to stab his friend in the rib cage to death.
Mbalule was rushed to Phalombe Health Centre for medical attention but he was pronounced dead upon arrival, said Nkhwazi, adding that post-mortem results disclosed that he died due to internal bleeding.
Nampinga who hails from Chanasa Village (TA) Mkhumba in the district is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of murder contrary to section 209 of the Malawi Penal Code.
