64 nabbed during a swiping exercise in Lilongwe

Lilongwe: Police in Lilongwe arrested 64 suspects during a sweeping exercise conducted during the Easter period who are suspected to have committed various offences within Lilongwe urban surrounding areas.

According to police spokesperson, Kingsly Dandaula, the suspects were arrested due to offences such as possession of cannabis sativa, selling liquor without license, being found with property suspected to have been stolen and inciting violence.

He further said during the exercise, they also arrested a man identified as Wyson Chikuse, 30, from Thambani Village in the area of Traditional Authority Thatche in Mwanza who was found with a stolen car battery.

The police managed to arrest 17 suspects and confiscated liquor which was being sold in private and public market places without license.

We confiscated liquor from several places which was sold unlawfully; the Malawi Bureau of Standards [MBS] does not allow selling of liquor in plastic bottles, explained Dandaula.

Police also arrested 11 suspects for illegal vending around the Town of Lilongwe.

During the said operation, Dandaula further said police arrested Mohommed Lameck, 21, from Kalima Village in the Area of Traditional Authority Msasa in Ntcheu for being found with 1.5 kg of cannabis sativa.

Annord Samson, 28, from Dongo Village in the Area of Traditional Authority Nsabwe in Thyolo was also nabbed for being found in possession of six twists of Cannabis sativa.

All the suspects are in custody pending court hearing, according to the police PRO.
