ActionAid urges collaboration in reducing poverty

Mchinji: ActionAid Malawi says collaboration among various stakeholders is vital in alleviating poverty in the country.

Head of Fundraising and Communications for ActionAid Malawi, Tiwonge Kumwenda Simkonda made the remarks in Mchinji on Monday during the opening of Kapiri Community Development Organization (KACODO) resource centre which the organization funded.

I believe development has to be a contribution of many players because issues of poverty are multi layered and need a holistic approach. As ActionAid, we are a partnership organization and we work with communities and organizations so that they are empowered, she said.

She said it was critical to engage all stakeholders in addressing root causes of poverty in communities.

Simkonda said through ActionAid Country Strategy Paper 5, the organization emphasizes its vision and long term goals to address poverty and injustice in Malawi.

Chief Gender Officer in the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Fred Simwaka said the opening of the resource centre compliments government efforts in reducing poverty and improving the socio economic status of people.

KACODO advocates for ending child marriages and empowering women to be self-reliant. This is what the government is also advocating for, he said.

Senior Chief Dambe commended Action Aid for supporting, education, early child development and women empowerment projects in his area.

During the function Action Aid donated sewing machines to 19 people who have completed training in tailoring.

KACODO was formed in 2012 with recommendation from Kapiri Area Development Committee (ADC).

The organisation has so far trained the community in HIV, agriculture, environment and women empowerment among other things.
