Blantyre, As part of its countrywide education drive, Airtel Malawi has donated 70 desks worth K2 million to Chisitu Catholic Primary School in Mulanje.
Headmaster for Chisitu Catholic Primary, Nambuzi Mbewe said the school have so many challenges including shortage of; desks, toilets, staffroom chairs’ and teacher’s houses.
Speaking during the handover ceremony of the desks on Thursday, Senior Zone Business Manager and National Key Accounts Manager Leslie Tsilizani said the donation is in response to the school’s call for help.
“Chisitu Primary School is facing so many challenges in areas like health and education. This is evidenced by its dilapidated state and Airtel Malawi being a major supporter of the Education sector, we could not ignore the call but engaged with the headmaster to improve the current learning conditions hence the donation of the 70 desks to benefit at least 140 pupils,” he said.
Tsilizani also applauded government, teachers, students and school committee members for managing with the limited teaching and learning resources available at the school and also called on other corporate stakeholders to support the public education sector.
“We know that the school has other areas requiring support and our call is for other corporate stakeholders to join our quest to likewise uplift the education sector, one school or classroom at a time,” said Tsilizani.
One of the standard eight pupils, Lonney Msika expressed gratitude for the donation saying the move will relieve challenges of desks which has been affecting their learning environment.
Established in 1922, Chisitu Primary School has a total enrolment of 2,156 pupils.
Airtel Malawi has over the recent years focused its resources towards supporting various primary, secondary and tertiary learning institutions across the country with desks, school books and other education resources.
