Lilongwe, President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika on Thursday launched the Red Cross Flag Week with a call for the citizenry to emulate Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) and embrace the spirit of volunteerism by serving others without looking for anything in return.
The president made the call at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
He said he is aware of the challenges the society faces but still works to support those in need and mostly does that through voluntary work.
Red Cross sacrificed a lot to reach out to victims and the needy. They have reached out to many people affected by disasters and this spirit has to be emulated by all of us, he said.
In order to assist the society in reaching out to as many people who need help as possible, Mutharika said from the 2019/2010 Financial Year the society will start getting government subvention.
The president’s assurance of the society getting government subvention comes amidst the society’s call for the president to honour his promise.
The president, who donated K1 million towards the Flag Week, said he is aware of the challenges the society faces in carrying out its duties hence the need to offer help for it to carry out its duties effectively.
He emphasized on the need to invest in the welfare of the people saying it is a strategic goal which can only be done if there are enough resources for that cause.
MRCS President, Levison Changole was grateful that the president has honoured honouree his promise of starting giving the society subvention describing it as good news.
We appreciate what the president has done. This is what we have been waiting for and for that we are grateful as this shows that government recognizes our work. We will ensure that the donation that we have received today is used for its intended purpose, said Changole.
He said the subvention will go a long way in addressing challenges that the society has been facing in reaching out to victims across the country.
Red Cross Society celebrates Red Cross Day on 8th May each year to honour the Red Cross Crescent Movement founder, Henry Dunant, who was born on this day in 1828.
MRCS intends to raise K128million during this year’s Flag Week that will go towards flood response.
