Chikwawa Council pounces on land encroachers

CHIKWAWA: Chikwawa District Council has issued an order to stop encroachers of public and private land from commencing any construction works.

District Commissioner, Fred Movete told Malawi News Agency (Mana) Wednesday that the council is currently revising the urban structure plan to ensure that any construction of houses and offices is done orderly.

The order comes when people in the district have encroached land belonging to Chikwawa Secondary School, vast land earmarked to construct a new district hospital, land for Thabwa Bus Depot and Mitole Estate Land of a businessman Rolph Patel.

“Encroachment of both public and private land has been rampant in the district. We believe time has come for such malpractices to be dealt with once and for all.

The Physical Planning Unit has to enforce sanity so that houses and offices are constructed in right places, said Movete.

He said what people needed to do was to follow procedures and make sure that whereever they build their houses utilities like water and power was available.

People in the district have gone to the extent of building their houses anywhere with some even doing this closer to graveyards, a situation which has made authorities to clearly say that enough is enough.

Meanwhile, the District Education Manager office is in the process of leasing land belonging to all government primary schools to bar would-be culprits.
