Child drowns in Lilongwe River

Lilongwe: A 10 year old child identified as Jonas Malusa from area 36 who drowned in Lilongwe River was Thursday found near Central Poultry Company on October 18, 2018.

The matter was reported by the deceased’s mother, Gladys Pulika, aged 36, from Chibwana Village Traditional Authority Njewa in the district.

Speaking with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Friday, Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, the deceased went home after school and later he told his mother that he would like to watch gule wamkulu at Katondo Village on Wednesday, October 17.

Dandaula added that the boy left but did not return home. The next day (Thursday) on October 18, a man identified as James Malison aged 64, from Njeleza Village T.A. Kasisi in Chikwawa District saw him floating in Lilongwe River.

Malison told his wife who told the deceased’s mother about the incident. The scene was visited by the police and we found that the body was already taken from the river by the villagers, he said.

He was later taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) where Postmortem was conducted and it was revealed that death was due to drowning, he added.

The deceased, Jonas Malusa, hailed from Chibwana Village, Traditional Authority Njewa in Lilongwe District.
