Chiradzulu: Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MoLGRD) says Community Managed Socio Economic Project (COMSEP) will be led by community structures to deepen decentralization.
The Area Development Committees and Village Development Committees are the ones to champion the project.
Public Relations Officer for MoLGRD, Muhlabashe Mughogho made the announcement on Tuesday during a full council meeting which the ministry organized at the boma to highlight procedures of the project so that stakeholders know their roles in the project.
Community structures will be trained on how to run the project and choose people who have knowledge in auditing and financial issues in their communities so that everything runs smoothly, she said.
However, Mughogho urged councilors, Members of Parliament and the council secretariat to work hand in hand with the communities to ensure that the project succeeds.
In his speech, Traditional Authority Ntchema commended government for the project, saying it has fulfilled what local communities have wished for a long time.
He said now decentralization had a meaning as communities would be able to prioritize what they want in terms of development, like primary health care, primary education, bridges and village access roads among others to improve their daily lives.
COMSEP would be implemented from the K4 billion that Parliament approved for community development which is the additional money to District Development Fund, Malawi Social Action Fund and Constituency Development Fund.
