Dausi calls for effective use of telecentres.

ZOMBA. Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Nicholas Dausi has called upon youths in the country to make use of telecentres government is constructing in the country.

Dausi said this on Monday when he officially opened Zomba Central Telecentre in Zomba city.

He said the facility which government has commissioned will help people especially the youth in accessing desired information in different aspects such as education and agriculture.

Government knows how crucial provision of ICT in the country is as its citizens have access to the information required.

Advancement of education through e-Learning as well as learn from various universities will also be done through this Telecentre, said Dausi.

He said being one of the cities in the country, government thought of prioritizing Zomba City in internet provision.

The Minister emphasized that the Telecentre would help the youth from various institutions in the city as well as in rural areas get relevant information in as far as education is concerned.

It is my wish to see the youth of this area make effective use of this facility in their studies in order to get what they want, he added.

He said the facility would not only benefit people academically but also in getting information of prices of agricultural commodities so that they are not cheated.

Director General for Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Godfrey Itaye said it is the wish of Malawi government to make ICT accessible to disadvantaged rural masses.

Itaye said there are deliberate measures government has put in place to achieve internet access in the country even in the remotest areas.

He mentioned about the drafted National Broadband strategy, Digital Literacy, Connect School programs and availability of Universal Service Fund as some of the measures put in place to achieve universal access of internet services in the country.

Member of Parliament for Zomba Central Constituency, Patricia Kainga Nangozo thanked government for considering her area to be one of the beneficiaries of the facility.

Nangozo said the commissioning of the Telecentre has proved that government is very willing to improving the status of Zomba City through implementation of various projects such as Sadzi Bridge, road network, Community stadium, Telecentre and street lights.

Being the chairperson for SADC Parliamentary Forum for youth, she encouraged the youth to patronize the facility since it has been built for them to make full use.

The facility will enable the youth to access internet, get jobs and generally know what is happening in the global world, she added.

She also appealed to the constituents to take care of the structure and equipments so that it lasts longer.

This is the first Telecentre to be commissioned in the district constructed with brick contribution from communities while government invested over K40Million for the equipment and connectivity.
