Dedza: Dedza District Health Office (DHO) says it has distributed 525,123 free insecticides treated mosquito nets to over 900,000 people in the district.
Dedza DHO Health Promotions Officer, Mwayi Liabunya said on Monday that the distribution was in line with World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendation of one mosquito net per two people.
We have managed to distribute 525,123 nets in the district within a period of six days,” he said.
Liabunya explained that malaria remains a major public health and development challenge in Malawi.
He however said the distribution of the nets is a commendable development in scaling up the fight against the disease.
The government of Malawi together with World Vision International procured 10, 958,222 mosquito nets which will be distributed to a population of over 17 million Malawians country wide.
One of the beneficiaries in Dedza, Maximina Mtumodzi commended government and World Vision for the exercise.
The mosquito nets will help us prevent malaria and in so doing, our families will remain healthy which means that we will be able to continue with our daily activities without any problems, she said.
The distribution campaign is funded by the Global Fund which pumped in $40million through World Vision International.
It is estimated that at least 3500 Malawians die from malaria every year.
