Zomba: Department of Disaster Management Affairs in the Office of the Vice President on Sunday condoled with the four bereaved families of standard three learners who died after a school block wall fell on them at Nantchengwa primary school in Zomba.
Director for Response and Recovery, Paul Kalilombe said his office was saddened by the death of the learners who would have contributed greatly to the development of the country.
The vice president wanted to condole with all bereaved families in person, but has not made it due to his busy schedule, said Kalilombe.
He then on behalf of the Vice President condoled the bereaved families with K150,000 each and K30,000 to every parent whose child was injured and admitted to Zomba Central Hospital.
According to our culture, we need to comfort each other in hard times like these, he said.
After visiting the school, Kalilombe admitted that the school block was not fit for learning.
Representing the bereaved families, William Muthipa from Mangulenje village said the whole village was mourning the passing on of the four learners.
He said the children would have contributed greatly to their families and to Malawi upon completion of their studies.
