Elimination of Child Labour in Tobacco (ECLT) Foundation, said is impressed with the activities that Child Labour Elimination for Real Change (CLEAR) project, which aims at reducing child labour through different initiatives, is undertaking in Ntchisi district.
During a monitoring visit in the district, the Project Coordinator for ECLT, Stephenie Garde, told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) Thursday that she was impressed to note that there were several interventions in the communities that were changing people’s lives, with full collaboration of the project staff and district stakeholders.
“Am impressed with all what I have seen on my visit. There are several activities that target parents just to ensure that they take proper care of their children. They are able to understand issues of child labour and are able to act where a child is abused,” she said.
Garde said the different committees formed in the communities were very instrumental in spearheading the agenda of the project which is to stop employing children in tobacco industry.
Programmes officer for Creative Centre for Community Mobilisation (CRECCOM) Edenzio Msangwa said the monitoring visit was a motivation to the project staff and the stakeholders at district.
“It’s encouraging for the donor to come and appreciate the work that we are doing in the communities. Our donor was pleased to see that district stakeholders support the project to ensure proper implementation to benefit communities,” he said.
Msangwa said the donors visit was an opportunity for communities to raise their development concerns that required their district council’s attention.
On fighting child labour, the project has interventions on education, agriculture, and empowers households by establishing Village Savings and Loans.
