ECM reflects on verbal attacks on the Catholic Church

Blantyre: Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has reflected on the verbal attacks being made against the Catholic Church by some politicians in the country ahead of the General elections next year.

In the press statement released on Thursday, the ECM denounced the recent attack on the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis saying the outrage also means an attack on the whole Catholic Church.

The Catholic Bishops have denounced the victimization of its members for cheap political gain.

We the Catholic Bishops are aware of our duties to foster unity and charity among individuals, the statement read.

We consider the collaboration with all religious mother bodies in the country in the pursuit of inter-faith dialogue, promotion of the common good and rule of law and the respect for human rights and human dignity, the Bishops stated.

The ECM observed that any form of religious intolerance and provocative sentiments should not be condoned because everyone worships the same God.

The ECM would like to advise people to avoid spreading force news using words that will cause conflict in the other parties, the statement added, calling on the Catholic faithfuls to pray for peace, genuine democracy, good governance and prosperity of the country.

In the previous Pastoral letter released earlier this year, the Bishops encouraged its faithfuls and the citizenry in general to actively take part in registering in the voters roll to exercise their right to vote in the 2019 Tripartite Elections.
