Mzuzu: Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (FISD) Limited in conjunction with Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Saturday launched the 2018/19 FISD Challenge Cup in Karonga.
Speaking during the launching ceremony of the cup, FAM’s Competitions Committee Chairperson, Jabber Alide thanked FISD for its contribution towards the development of football in the country.
“FAM is thankful to FISD for the role it plays in football development in the country. FISD introduced the cup in 2016 and this is the third year of the cup’s existence,” he said.
Alide pledged that FAM would continue to strive to make the cup’s competition a success.
“We are pledging to work hard so that this year’s FISD Cup competition is a success. We will run this cup competition in a professional manner,” he pointed out.
FISD Limited Communications Manager, Wezzie Chiumia said as the company geared at improving farming technologies to mechanize farming and it wants to empower youths to realize their sporting talents especially in football.
“We sponsor football to develop sporting talent; this is a competition which provides teams with a platform through which they can with the top sides in the country.
We sponsor the game as a tool of taking our name to the people. People should know of what we do and what services they can get from FISD as we strive to develop the agricultural industry, he stated.
Paramount Chief Kyungu thanked FISD Limited for launching the cup in Karonga and advised youths to utilize the cup competition to expose their sporting talents.
During the launch, Chitipa United beat Fish Eagles 4-1 in a knock out game and the result has seen Chitipa progressing to the next round of the competition.
