International engagements affect Rainbow Paints League calendar

Blantyre, The Rainbow Paints Southern Region Netball League season will cross over to next year as several games were postponed due to national netball tram international engagements.

The league, which supplies the bulk of players who feature for the Queens, had initially planned to conclude the season in December, 2017.

Currently, defending champions Kukoma Diamonds are favourites to clinch the League title.

The league’s General Secretary, Annie Hanjahanja, said it will be difficult to conclude the league this year because of factors such as tight national team commitments.

Hanjahanja pointed out that the Queens’ assignments compelled the league’s organisers to exempt several teams from games in the past weeks.

As such, we could not allocate games to teams whose players were with the national team. We have tried to come up with midweek fixtures, but this did not help matters.

So, we are obviously concluding the league next year, she observed adding: we know this is costly on the part of teams and organisers, but there is nothing we can do.

The Malawi National Netball team recently participated in a number of competitions such as Fast 5 Netball World Series in Melbourne, Australia and three strength testing matches in England.

Hanjahanja said the League will wrap up in January, 13 (2018) with Kukoma Diamonds taking on Thunder Queens.

Meanwhile, games resume on Thursday with Kukoma Diamonds expected to play two games against Gerald Tasaukadala and Chilomoni Sisters at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC), while Thunder Queens will host Shizaella Queens.
