LL man in for stealing MK3.5m worth of property

A Twenty-eight-year-old man, Bernard Nyirongo, is in Kanengo Police custody in Lilongwe for allegedly stealing various items worth MK3,450,000 at his work place in Area 49, in the city.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kanengo Police Station, Salome Chibwana, told Malawi News Agency (Mana) Thursday, that the man was arrested on Wednesday following a complaint by the proprietor of Novablanca Lodge, Goyigoyi Khonje, that his lodge had been robbed of various items.

Nyirongo was working at Novablanca Lodge as a front desk officer and between December 2016 and January 2017 while the owner was away, he allegedly stole 6 plasma screens, 15 electrical irons, and 10 kettles all valued at MK3,450,000 according to Chibwana.

It was upon his return that Khonje realized the items were missing at his lodge and he reported the matter to Kanengo Police who have since managed to arrest the suspect and recovered some of the stolen items.

Nyirongo hails from Bolero T/A Chikulamayembe in Rumphi and he will appear in court soon to answer the charge of Theft by Servant, contrary to Section 283 (1) of the Penal Code.

In a related development, the Kanengo Police is also keeping in custody 25-year-old man, Noel Dzonzi, for suspected house breaking and theft of various items yet to be valued.

According to Chibwana, Dzonzi is suspected to have broken into the house of a Mr. Charles Mpingasa in Area 25, Dzenza, on January 17 where he went away with a Plasma TV, 1 laptop, clothes including expensive suits, 5 laptop bags, 2 internet routers, a mixer and other small electronic appliances.

After Mr. Mpingasa reported the matter our CID department went to work and they gathered enough intelligence to trace him to Salima where he had sold some of the items, explained Chibwana, adding, They also found Dzonzi in the process and they arrested him there.

She said out of the stolen items, only the mixer, the routers, the laptop bags and the clothes (minus the suits) have been recovered.

Dzonzi’s accomplice is still at large and the police are yet to zero in on him. Dzonzi hails from Mwange Village, T/A Kalonga, Salima, and he is expected to appear before court soon to answer the charge of House Breaking, contrary to Section 309 sub-section 1(a), according to Chibwana.
