Lilongwe,: Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) in partnership with Airtel Malawi on Monday donated food items to flood victims in the area of Traditional Authorities Pemba of Salima District.
150 displaced families who now live in Msumwa, Kandulu, Lifidzi and Mgwilizano camps were left homeless in February this year due heavy rains that washed away their property and crops.
Division Chairperson for Salima Red Cross, Handwatch Steven -speaking while MRCS made the donation, said his organisation is committed to assist affected households with different food stuffs and K50, 000 per family to ease their situation.
Due to heavy rains, some people around T/A Pemba were heavily affected by the floods hence the donation, said Steven adding that this will not be a once off donation.
Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Alaika Kasambwe, one of the beneficiaries thanked MRCS for the continued support to their families.
During the rainy season, we almost lost everything including our crops which were washed away by the floods. This donation will help us build back our lives,” said Kasambwe.
Every year, Airtel Malawi partners with MRCS in disaster response across the country. This year, Airtel Malawi pumped in MK10 million towards the disaster response program which has benefited flood victims from Karonga and Salima districts. The donation compliments assistance that government provides to the flood victims of Salima and Karonga disaster areas.
