Man arrested for being found in possession of Indian hemp

Police in Ndirande are keeping in custody a 37-year old man for being found in possession of Indian hemp.

The suspect, Francis Khoza was arrested after well-wishers tipped Police officers who were on duty around Makata in Ndilande.

Confirming to Malawi News Agency, Blantyre Police Deputy Spokesperson, Andrew Mayawo said police officers from Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were tipped about the suspect who had Indian hemp locally known as chamba.

“The suspect was using a taxi registration number KU 1731 but he did not go far as the officers managed to stop him,” said Mayawo.

Mayawo further said police found three bags of 90 kgs of cannabis sativa which the suspect carried in his taxi.

The suspect is yet to appear in court to answer charges of being found in possession of cannabis sativa contrary to Section 4 (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Regulations and 19 (1) of Dangerous Drugs Act.

Francis hails from Kapasula Village, Traditional Authority Nsanama in Balaka district.
