Man behind bars for malicious damage

BALAKA, A 32 year old man on Tuesday was sentenced to 48 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for malicious harm and intimidation.

Balaka Police Deputy Police Publicist, Precious Makuta told Malawi News Agency (MANA) in an interview on Wednesday that during the night of March 27, 2019, at Chiyendausiku Area in Balaka, Majawa Matiki maliciously damaged windows and doors of his father’s house.

Said Makuta: “The convict has been demanding money from his parents for useless reasons several times.

“On the day of the incident, the convict went to his parents and demanded five thousand kwacha from them. He threatened to stab them with a knife that he was holding at that particular time if they refused to give him the money.”

According to Makuta, the parents tried to reason with him, but he could not listen and started breaking the windows which forced them to give him the money.

The Balaka Third Grade Magistrate, Meya Kanyumbu therefore found Matiki guilty as his conduct was contrary to sections 344(1) and 88(1) of the penal code.

He therefore granted him a custodial sentence of 36 months with hard labour for the offence of malicious damage and 12 months with hard labour for intimidation which will run concurrently,” he said.

Matiki hails from Lupanga Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Nsamala in Balaka.
