A man in his thirties, whose particulars are not yet known, has died after taking alcohol on an empty stomach.
Mzuzu Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Cecilia Mfune, told Malawi News Agency the man died on the night of Monday.
She said some well-wishers reported to police that a man had collapsed near Little Havana Bar in the city after taking too much beer without food.
“After receiving these reports, police rushed to the scene and took the man to Mzuzu Central Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon reaching the hospital.
“A medical report has indicated that his death has been caused by dehydration as a result of excessive beer drinking. As I speak, his remains are being kept at the [Mzuzu] Central Hospital mortuary,” said Mfune.
Police have since called on the general public to go to the northern region’s referral hospital mortuary to identify the man, and have advised the public to refrain from excessive drinking on an empty stomach.
This is the second incident in a space of four days after a tobacco tenant, identified as Kondwani Mkwate Phiri from Jonas Village in the area of Traditional Authority Sapanga in Salima District, died at Ekwendeni, north of the city, under similar circumstance.
