Man drowns in a road side drain in Nkhata Bay

Nkhata Bay, A 60 year-old man identified as Kelvin Jere died after drowning in a road side drain in Nkhata Bay District on Tuesday.

Nkhata Bay Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Ignatius Esau, told Malawi News Agency Thursday that the incident occurred when he was coming from a drinking joint.

On the April 25,2017, Jere left home for beer drinking in a nearby village and did not report back home until April 26. A search was carried out that’s when he was found lying dead in a road-side drain full of water, the police spokesperson said.

Esau explained that the law enforcers together with the Nkhata Bay District Hospital medical team visited the scene and the postmortem conducted at the district hospital indicated Jere had died due to suffocation.

Police in the district have since advised members of the community in the district to drink responsibly and take measures to avoid such accidents.

We are advising people to desist from walking long distances after taking beer, especially now that it is rainy season, so that deaths of such nature may be avoided, Esau appealed.

Kelvin Jere hailed from Goneka Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Timbiri in the district.
