Man drowns in Lake Malawi after excessive drinking

Mangochi, April 24, 2016: A fourty year old man identified as Edward Mwenje has drowned at Malembo Fishing Dock in Lake Malawi in Mangochi after attempting to swim while drunk, Malawi News Agency has learnt.

Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Rodrick Maida while confirming the incident said the deceased went to the lake to swim after consuming too much alcohol.

He said he failed to swim in the waters due to his drunken state. “He failed to make it when he tried to swim due to his drunkenness,” Maida alleged. “It was on Thursday around 7pm when the incident happened.”

Maida added that a postmortem conducted at Malembo Health Centre revealed that death was as a result of suffocation.

Meanwhile, Maida said the police is urging people to desist from taking to swimming in a stupor state for fear of death due to drowning.

Mwenje hailed from Chilinga Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nankumba in Mangochi.

In a related development, a 39 year old man from Chingombe Village in the area of T/A Nankumba has died after falling from a tree in search of baobab fruits. The incident happened on Wednesday in the district.

Acording to Maida, the man identified as Stanley Mkandawire met his fate when he climbed a baobab tree to pluck some fruits and in the process slipped and clashed to the ground.

“As a result of the falling, he sustained head injuries,” Maida said. “Results of a postmortem carried out at Monkey Bay Community Hospital showed that death was due to head injuries.”
