Maneb takes SAAEA Chairmanship

Blantyre, The Acting Executive Director for Malawi National Examination Board (Maneb), Jack Stephen Chalimba, has been appointed as chairperson for the Southern Africa Educational Assessment (SAAEA) replacing Dr Michael Chilala, Executive Director for Examinations Council of Zambia.

SAAEA is a grouping of test developers, educationalists, administrators, curriculum specialists and researchers from countries within SADC region and beyond, who aims at harmonizing and improving standards of education across the continent.

In his acceptance speech on Wednesday during the official closing of this year’s SAAEA conference in Mangochi, Chalimba said the appointment signifies confidence that the association member organizations had towards Maneb and Malawi at large.

As stipulated in SAAEA Strategic plan set for 20l4 to 20l8, Malawi through Maneb is among others expected to lead in developing a teacher training module on assessment to enhance the teaching of assessment matters to trainee teachers in colleges of education and introducing SAAEA to universities in the SADC region.

This chairmanship is challenging my institution to implement the remaining outputs without fail so as to have regional quality educational assessment systems by December, 2018. I have hope and confidence that this will surely materialize and we shall be reporting this success story next year, he said.

In his remarks, outgoing SAAEA Chairperson, Dr Chilala congratulated Chalimba and MANEB for taking over leadership of SAAEA.

Dr Chilala further asked the Ministry of Education in Malawi, which was well represented by its directors, to give Maneb full support as it leads SAAEA.

Earlier, during the official opening of the conference, the then Minister of Education, science and Technology, Dr Emmanuel Fabiano, told the delegates that the Ministry would be providing all the required support within its mandate.

SAAEA provides a platform for various stakeholders to share ideas on good practices of conducting educational assessments in order to enhance quality education in SADC countries exchanging.

This year’s 11th meeting which run from l7th to l9th July was being held under the theme ‘Promoting Excellence in Assessment for Quality Education’

The 12th SAAEA conference will be hosted by UMALUSI in South Africa, according to SAAEA new chair.
