Maseko Ngoni LL Chapter gather young dancers to preserve culture

Lilongwe, The Maseko Ngoni living in Lilongwe will on Sunday host a cultural festival at Shire Urban School ground in Lilongwe with the aim of drilling young boys and girls on their culture.

Inkosi ya Makhosi Gomani V wants children to be taught on all cultural values that matter to a real Ngoni while they are still young. The idea is to make sure that we pass on our Ngoni culture hence this festival, said Chairperson of the Maseko Ngoni Lilongwe Chapter, Andrew Kamlopa Chisale.

According to Kamlopa Lilongwe Chapter, has already assembled 41 boys (Amajaha) and 46 girls (Mantombezane) from all the active eight zones of Area 36, Area 49, Area 25, Chinsapo-Likuni, Area 12-Kauma, Mtandire, Kawale and Lumbadzi that are functioning under his supervision.

Maseko Ngoni originally came from South Africa in Kwazulu Natal but fled to Malawi from the tyranny leadership of Shaka the Zulu who was a strong and a harsh fighter. On our way, we lost our culture. Inkosi ya Makhosi Gomani V wants to restore this lost culture, Kamlopa narrated.

He added that as Paramount Chief Gomani V initiated Umhlangano wa Maseko Ngoni which is a national function celebrated annually at Nkolimbo Village under Inkosi Kwataine in Ntcheu.

Commenting on the development Matron of the Amajaha, Gladys White said Ngoni kids are growing without knowing the culture of their parents.

We want more Ngoni children to learn more about their culture in so doing, we can preserve it. Children need to be taught while they are young so that they won’t forget who they are and where they come from, White said.

Inkosi ya Makhosi Gomani who is also known by other chieftaincy royal names such as Gumede and Ingwenyama also initiated the idea of having Isizulu language lessons in an effort to revamp long lost tongue of the Maseko Ngonis which Lilongwe chapter launched in Chinsapo township recently.

We are also going to teach the 87 children their mother language Isingoni besides drilling them on how they can prepare Ngoni regalia that comprise headgear (mthini or nyoni), clubs (nduku) and ‘Mangelengeza, added White.

Gomani reigns over all the Maseko Ngoni from Songea -Tanzani, Angonia- Mozambique and host Malawi with his headquarters at Lizwe la Zulu which is corrupted as Lizulu.
