Mzuzu: Mzuzu City council has closed Mzuzu Stadium in readiness for the country’s Independence Day Celebrations which are scheduled to take place in the city on July 6.
Confirming the development to Malawi News Agency, Tuesday, Director of Parks, Leisure and Environment for Mzuzu City Council, Godwin Pondelani said the council has decided to close the facility to pave way for renovations on the pitch and the whole facility.
As council we thought it wise to close the facility so that we can work on the pitch and carry out maintenance works on some of the facility’s structures which are in bad state to host such a big event when the nation will be celebrating the 54th Anniversary Independence.
We have put top fertile soils on the ground and we will be watering the grass to improve the condition of the pitch, said Pondelani.
Mzuzu Stadium is the home ground for two Super League outfits, Moyale Barracks Football Club and Mzuzu University (MZUNI) Football Club who have now been forced to look for other venues to fulfill their home fixtures.
Meanwhile Super League of Malawi has rescheduled the coming weekend fixtures which were slated for Mzuzu Stadium to a date which will be communicated.
Super League defending champions, Mighty Be Forward Wanderers FC were supposed to face Mzuni FC and Moyale Barracks FC at Mzuzu Stadium on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
The stadium will be ready to host Super League and Cup matches from 9th July this year
