Mchinji Police nets 126 in a sweeping exercise

Lilongwe, Police in Mchinji Thursday arrested 126 people suspected of being connected to different crimes in the district.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency, Mchinji police public relations officer Kaitano Lubrino said police conducted a sweeping exercise in the early hours of Thursday with the aim of curb crime which is becoming rampant in the district,

He said the exercise mostly targeted those on wanted list and have been on the run after committing various offences.

Lubrino said the suspects, comprised of seven female and 119 male suspects, were arrested at Kapiri and Kamwendo trading centres and other areas surrounding Mchinji boma.

The suspects have been charged with idle and disorderly conduct while others are those that were not honouring their bail conditions hence facing a re-arrest, he said.

Lubrino further said the exercise forms part of routine police operations that facilitates the arrests of all wanted persons in an effort to reduce crime in the country and Mchinji in particular.

Mchinji has experienced rise in crime rate ranging from armed robbery, defilement among others.
