Media urged to play rightful role in population census

Dedza: The Media in the country have been urged to take a leading role in disseminating information about population and housing census which rolls out on 3 September this year.

Speaking on Wednesday during a press briefing in Dedza, the Supervisor for Population and Housing Census in the district, Chikwawo Mbewe, said the media are very crucial in clearing any misconceptions that may be associated with the exercise.

He said misconceptions might arise from the fact that several registration exercises have been happening in the country citing national registration, voter registration and registration for mosquito nets by Ministry of Health and World Vision Malawi.

We will rely on the media to help us in disseminating the right information to people out there so that they should understand that the population and housing census is different from these other registration exercises that have been taking place, Chikwawo said.

He pointed out that the goodness of the population and housing census is that the enumerators would be going to each and every house so that nobody should be missed out during the exercise.

Mbewe added that the enumerators would be using tablet phones to enter data.

District Civic Education Officer for National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) in Dedza, Patrick Siwinda, said there is need for collaboration among various stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of the exercise.
