MIJ to roll out Degree programme in July

Blantyre, Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) has announced it will start a Degree Journalism programme by July this year (2019) and that preparations are at an advanced stage for the same.

MIJ Executive Director, Anthony Phanga revealed the development Friday in Blantyre during the graduation of 447 students in journalism certificates and diplomas.

We are aiming to roll out a Degree Program as soon as July this year. As of now, we are at advanced stage of developing the curriculum.

By the end of May, this year (2019), publicity will start on how people can join the programme, said Phanga.

Since its inception in the late 1990s, MIJ has been offering certificates and diplomas in journalism, while the country’s public and private universities have been offering journalism degree courses.

On the graduation of students, Phanga said MIJ will continue producing journalists who will work professionally and adhere to the code of ethics.

We have become partners with government to develop areas where government cannot reach through the presentation of the voiceless, said Phanga.

Speaking earlier at the function as guest of honour, Director of Information and Communications Technology, Gideon Munthali asked journalists in the country to practice their trade professionally and objectively as the country drifts closer to the 2019 tripartite elections.

He described the media as a critical partner in development, encouraging the graduating students to practice all the ethical principles they learnt in class.

As we are heading towards the tripartite election, you are responsible for making sure that the country has free and fair elections through the information that you will provide to the public, which hopefully will be balanced.

Government is currently committed to ensure that every journalist in Malawi operates without harassment and intimidation. However, as journalists, you are charged to execute your job responsibly, said the Munthali.

A total of 447 students have graduated with certificates and Diplomas in Journalism from the institution this year.
