Blantyre, Malawi News Agency (MANA) Staff at the Regional Information Office (South) were on Thursday inspired through a surprise visit by the recently appointed Deputy Director of Information (DDOI) responsible for Press and Publications, Deogratias Mmana.
Speaking to the gathered Journalists, Mmana cited hard work, enthusiasm, adherence to ethics and professionalism as some of the major principles required for Journalists in the country to excel in their careers.
Mmana bemoaned laxity among some officers saying there are Information Officers that were deployed in the country’s districts who have forgotten their job descriptions and have taken on different roles contrary to what the ministry stipulates.
As Information Officers, our core function is to inform the nation about aspects happening around the country which include the developmental programs that government is undertaking. This information at the end of the day is used by Malawians to make informed decisions that helps the country, said the Deputy Director.
Taking his turn, the Deputy Regional Information Officer (South), Papiya Mwahara, welcomed the DDOI’s visit echoing his remarks that Information Officers need to work hard and be professional in furnishing the nation with information.
Mwahara said with the dawn of the technological age, Information Officers need to be more vigilant in providing Malawians with factual and reliable information away from half-truths that some people easily access through social media platforms.
According to Mwahara, it is only through a well informed nation that people can make decisions that can propel the country’s social-economic development.
