Motorcycle taxi operators told to register motorcycles

Dedza: Police in Dedza has asked Motorcycle taxi operators in the district to register their motorcycles.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Wednesday, Dedza Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sergeant Edward Kabango said that there is need for motorcycle taxi operators to register their motorbikes as this can help to trace their motorcycles if once stolen.

Motorcycles which are registered are easy to trace whenever they are stolen hence as police we are calling upon all motorcyclists to register their motorcycles, he said

Kabango noted that some motorcycle operators do not report to the police whenever they are involved in an accident as they fear of being charged for not registering their motorcycles.

Chairman for Motorcycle taxi operators in Dedza, Innocent Chithonji said that most motorcycles are not registered and they are doing businesses without licenses hence they fear to report to police whenever they are involved in a road accident.

He said that they cannot afford to have a license because it is very expensive.

Chithonji pointed out motorcycles are very cheap nowadays in Dedza but getting a license is very expensive.

He asked government to reduce the license fee so that more people can afford to have licenses.
