MPs support Digital Malawi Project

Salima, The Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Nicholas Dausi has assured members of parliament (Mps) that government will continue to invest in the development of Information and communications technology (ICT) sector to facilitate social and economic development.

Dausi made the sentiments on Saturday when he opened a consultative workshop on Digital Malawi Project for Media, Information and Communication and Budget and Finance parliamentary committees at Sunbird Livingstonia in Salima.

The Minister thanked the Parliamentary Committee on Media, Information and Communication for supporting government’s efforts towards developing the digital sector by passing the Access to Information bill and the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) policy.

The digital or ICT sector is a key for every country’s growth and development. It is therefore important for us as a country to move towards improving our ICT infrastructure so as to improve efficiency in government work and also the private sector, said Dausi.

Dausi said that the Digital Malawi Project which is funded by the World Bank to the tune of K52 billion is a step towards the country to be fully digitized.

Government wants to ensure that the country is fully digitized in the next few years. The Digital Malawi Project will address various issues including issues of Malawian content, distribution of internet and internet prices and the opening of the digital sector to more investors, said Dausi.

In an interview, chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Media, Information and Communication, Sam Kawale said that the committee believes that the project will help to increase internet accessibility and quality.

It is high time as a country we had such a project, we need to move together with (other countries in) the world. This project will tremendously increase access to information digitally and improve the way people do business as more will access the internet, said Kawale.

Kawale said that his committees will work hard to support the development of a good environment for the development of the ICT sector.
