Blantyre, A new broom has arrived at the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) with Khungekile Matiya being elected as the president during elections that took place on Saturday at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi.
Matiya defeated former NAM General Secretary Hellene Mpinganjira Tasosa with 37 votes against nine and will replace outgoing president Rosy Chinunda who did not defend the presidency after serving for three consecutive four-year terms.
In her acceptance speech, Matiya promised to uplift the game of netball from the grass root level. She said time has come for junior teams like the under-21 netball team to find corporate sponsorship.
I will make sure to secure a sponsor for junior teams. Time has gone to rely on government funding alone, she said.
Mpinganjira-Tasosa, who accepted her defeat, said her door was open if Matiya will need ideas.
The vice chairperson position went to Chimwemwe Kachingwe, who defeated former Malawi Queens’ star Judith Chalusa.
Carol Bapu was re-elected General Secretary after securing 38 votes against renowned umpire Faggie Mwalweni’s eight.
Brian Gausi retained the post of Vice-General Secretary with 37 votes having defeated former Tigresses and Malawi Queens shooter Linda Magombo Munthali who had eight votes.
