Lilongwe: The Lilongwe based Chewa heritage group know as Ochewa Ofewa said it has embraced in supporting primary schools, in a quest to promote primary education in the country.
The group is providing learning and teaching materials such as; exercise books, pens, pencils, chalk and food items to primary schools situated in various areas in the country.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) Ochewa Ofewa Chairperson, Terry Kavalo said that his organization is focusing to reduce the rate of school dropout among primary school learners.
As Ochewa Ofewa we are reaching out to primary schools with various material support so that many children across the country are not dropping out of school due to lack of school basic needs, for this reason we embarked on donating various items that are relevant to primary pupils, said Kavalo.
In May 2018, the group visited Mphando Primary School in Namitete area in Lilongwe District where they cheered learners and donated learning materials, sports equipment, rolls of cloth for uniforms and shoes.
Recently, the Chewa socialite group also visited Mua School for the Deaf in Dedza District where they donated various items such as; exercise books, pens, pencils, cooking oil, bales of sugar, bales of soya pieces, beans, plastic cups, cartons of soap and soccer balls all worthy K500, 000.
Kavalo is optimistic that through the initiative of charity works which his group is currently doing would help to motivate children in primary schools to concentrate on their studies and excel in education.
As a group, we are confident that our plans will help primary school learners to focus on their education and achieve their different goals in future, he said.
Ochewa Ofewa, a group of 72 highly sociable members said that is planning to extend its charity work to prisons and hospitals in the country.
