Phalombe man nabbed for brutality

Police in Phalombe are keeping in custody a 46 year old man for allegedly injuring another man through beating.

The man, Tobias Gama who hails from Nalingula village, Traditional Authority Kaduya was arrested on suspicion that he beat Felix Mpembedza aged 20, from Robert village, Traditional Authority Mulumbe in Zomba.

According to Police Public Relations Officer for Phalombe, Augustus Nkhwazi, during the night of January 5, 2017 the accused had caught the victim in his daughter’s bedroom where he was supposedly seducing the girl.

This angered the father who started beating the young man with a piece of timber; severely wounding him in the head. The victim lost consciousness on the spot and he was taken to Holy Family Mission Hospital to receive medical attention, he explained.

He added that the young man was upon arrival referred to Zomba Central Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

Meanwhile Gama has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm under section 254 of the Malawi Penal Code which stipulates that ‘any person who commits an assault occasioning actual bodily harm is guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall be liable to imprisonment for five years with or without corporal punishment’.
