Mzuzu, Plan International- Malawi on Thursday handed over a state-of- the- art girls’ hostel to Enyezini Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mzimba which will reduce the long distance girls cover when going to school.
Speaking in an interview, Plan International Malawi Country Director, Daniel Muchena, said his organisation constructed the hostel in response to the request from communities.
I should say here that we are happy to officially hand over this hostel to communities around Enyezini CDSS, after they asked us to consider constructing the hostel here.
We learnt that girls walk long distances when going to school which, in turn, was affecting their performance in class, said Muchena.
The Country Director said the hostel would help girls at the school to unleash their academic potential because of the now reduced distance to school.
Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Director of Administration, Hillary Mainja, commended Plan International- Malawi for constructing the hostel, saying the gesture would complement government’s efforts in uplifting girls in education.
As government, we are extremely happy for the organisation to hand over this hostel as it will greatly help girls here.
Usually, girls from rural communities fail to further their education mainly because of long distances which they cover when going to school.
This is why we are thankful to Plan International for their timely donation, he said.
