Police arrest man for being found in possession of Indian hemp

Blantyre: Police in Limbe are keeping in custody a 30 year old man for being found in possession of Cannabis Sativa popularly known as Chamba.

Limbe Police Assistant Public Relations Officer, Widson Nhlane, told Malawi News Agency on Wednesday that the suspect, Omari Righton, was arrested on Tuesday during traffic checks by traffic police officers.

On July 18, 2017, in the morning hours, traffic police officers were conducting traffic checks along Kenyatta Drive in Kanjedza Township. In the course of their work, one of the officers stopped a vehicle registration number BQ 4236 for the traffic offence of answering a phone call whilst driving, said Nhlane.

Nhlane said in the process, the officer discovered that driver and his accomplice who ran away carried two bags containing the illicit drug weighing 90 kilograms each.

So far, the stuff has been sent to Bvumbwe Research Station for examination before the suspect is taken to court to answer the charge of being found in possession of Cannabis Sativa, said Nhlane.

Meanwhile, Police officers are still looking for the remaining suspect to answer the same offence.

The suspect hails from Somanje Village in area of Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre.
