Police in Blantyre arrest 16 people in a sweeping exercise

Blantyre, Police in Blantyre on Thursday night arrested 16 people for suspecting them to be involved in different criminal activities in the district.

The suspects were arrested during a sweeping exercise the police conducted in the commercial city and South Lunzu policing areas.

Blantyre Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Dorah Chathyoka, told Malawi News Agency the sweeping exercise was in response to the fast approaching festive season, where many criminals take advantage of the season to commit various crimes.

Chathyoka said some suspects were arrested in connection with offences such as being found in possession of Indian hemp, theft, drinking and incapable, and idle and disorderly, among others.

One of the suspects is a female and they are expected to appear before the court to answer their respective charges, Chathyoka added.

Meanwhile, the publicist has assured people of Blantyre of police continued provision of safety and security to both people’s lives and property during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
