Blantyre, National Statistical Office (NSO) says it is in the final stages of compiling a detailed final report on the 2018 Population and Housing Census whose preliminary findings were released on January 10, this year.
NSO Public Relations Officer, Kingsley Manda told Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Tuesday, the final report would incorporate various issues dealing with water and sanitation, literacy levels, agriculture and disabilities among others.
The preliminary findings on the population and housing census generalized the findings in terms of total number of people in the country.
But the final report has gone as far as specifically considering the number of people having decent houses and access to clean and potable water.
It has also segmented the population in terms of literacy levels and disabilities among others, he explained.
Manda therefore said currently, the compilation of the detailed report is at an advanced stage and that any time soon the National Statistics Office would be releasing the findings to the public.
Initially, we planned to release the report in April but we have delayed because we were incorporating vital issues of national importance and analyzing them thoroughly in order to release accurate information to the public.
However, I must say that we are done with the compilation and soon the report will be made available to the masses, he said.
One of the stakeholders in the implementation of the Population and Housing Census, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Resident Representative in Malawi, Yong Hong, commended the role NSO is playing in the exercise.
Generally, NSO is doing a commendable job and the delay in releasing the final report in time could be due to technical hiccups. However, we are eyeing for the release of the findings of the report, Hong said.
NSO was established in 1963 and is mandated by the Statistics Act to collect, analyse, publish and disseminate official statistics for evidence-based policy formulation, decision-making and monitoring and evaluation of development programmes.
Malawi conducts the Population and Housing Census every 10 years. The 20l8 census exercise started on September 3 to 26 September, 2018.
