President Professor Peter Mutharika has donated K20 million to Mzuzu University (Mzuni) towards the purchase of books and computers that were destroyed when the university’s library was razed by fire late last year.
Mutharika, who is also the Chancellor of the University, made the donation Wednesday when he toured the facility to appreciate the challenges the college is facing following the inferno.
During the tour, the president was shown the gutted library and the institution’s hall which has now turned into a make-shift library the university is currently using, pending construction of a new library.
Mzuni Vice Chancellor, Robert Ridley, thanked the president for the donation, saying the money will help the university to purchase books and computers.
Ridley said the college needs specialist books and therefore, the money donated by Mutharika will assist in the purchase of such books.
“We are thankful to the President for the donation as it will go a long way assisting us in purchasing some of the specialist books, we are currently still struggling to source more books,” he said.
He added that since the fire accident, many people have been coming forth with donations of books and furniture.
Fire gutted Mzuzu University Library on the early hours of December 18 last year (2015), destroying 45,000 books, computers, information server centre and furniture among other things.
The cause of the fire is still not known as Electricity Supply Cooperation of Malawi (Escom) is yet to submit a final report on the accident, according to Ridley.
