Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRSM) has organized a panel discussion under the theme The common enemy: unpacking fake news ahead of 2019 tripartite elections.
The Panel discussion will tackle issues like who is responsible for the spread of fake news in Malawi, can fake news have any impact on the 2019 tripartite elections and how can this problem be solved.
In an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Wednesday, the President of PRSM, Lewis Msasa stated that the goal of this panel discussion is to provide Public Relations practitioners, elections and governance organizations with tools for countering fake news with a special focus on the 2019 tripartite elections.
We want to identify key categories of the population involved in the propagation of fake news, ascertain the impact of fake news on the 2019 elections from a public relations perspective and to identify public relations strategies for minimizing the impact of fake news, he said.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Sangwani Mwafulirwa expressed gratitude to the development.
It is a good platform for stakeholders to discuss and reflect on fake news and decide means and strategies minimizing their negative effects on elections, he said.
The development emerges as the country approaches 2019 May tripartite elections.
The panel discussion targets Public Relation practitioners, electoral and governance institutions, individuals, journalists among others.
The Panel discussion will be held on December 20, 2018 at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.
