Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) on Thursday introduced a K422.3 million Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) initiative to Mangochi District Nutrition Coordinating Committee (DNCC) for scrutiny before presenting the same to the District Executive Committee.
The initiative, among others, involves nutrition sensitive interventions for reducing stunting and it will be implemented in four districts, including Mangochi, according to MRCS SUN coordinator, Malumbo Nyirenda.
Nyirenda said the objective of the intervention was to contribute towards reduction in stunting and wasting by an average annual rate of two percent.
She said this would be done from a baseline by focusing on children aged from 0 to 23 months, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women in the four participating districts.
The project will run for four years and it will be implemented in Chikwawa, Mangochi, Mulanje and Neno with funding amounting to K422. 3 million, Nyirenda said.
She added that the project’s main goal is to contribute to the improvement of the nutritional status of under five children in the four selected districts in the southern region of Malawi.
The implementation of the project will be done through the use of care group model with an aim of building the capacity of teams of cluster leaders who will later train individual households based on peer to peer education approach, she pointed out.
Nyirenda further said that the aim of using the care group model was to promote behaviour change through increased coverage of mothers, fathers and other care givers who would be reached with health and nutrition messages.
Meanwhile, Mangochi DNCC members have proposed that the project should be implemented in Traditional Authorities Chimwala, Chilipa, Chiunda and Chowe.
At the time of going to press, the MRCS were scheduled to present the project before the Mangochi District Executive Committee on Friday for further input and observations.
