Russian Grandmaster in to drill Olympiad chess squad

Lilongwe: Russian chess Grandmaster, Vasily Papin, is in the country on a 13-day visit to drill the five men and five women who qualified to fly the country’s flag in the 43rd chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia.

The 29-year-old GM who landed through Chileka International Airport Monday afternoon, said he would mainly focus on chess opening preparation, strategy, tactics and puzzles.

First off, I will handle strategy and tactics, some puzzles, and of course some opening preparation with some more (chess) studies, explained Papin when asked on his approach to the training.

Among the players in the men’s squad are country’s highest titled Fide Master (FM), Gerald Mphungu, Africa Amateur gold medalist, Chiletso Chipanga, and Malawi’s highest rated Joseph Mwale.

Flag fliers in the ladies section include Malawi’s highest titled Woman Fide Master (WFM), Linda Jambo, Desiderata Nkhoma and Ellen Mpinganjira.

Meanwhile, the training sessions are underway at Blantyre Sports Council according to Publicist for Chess Association of Malawi (CHESSAM) Publicist, Makhosi Nyirenda.

During his visit, the GM is also scheduled to show a simultaneous exhibition, where he will play several of the country’s players at once.
