Lilongwe, While the National registration exercise is underway, police in Nkhotakota are keeping in custody 23 year-old Christopher Victor, a Rwandan national for allegedly registering as a Malawian citizen.
According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Nkhotakota Police Station, Paul Malimwe, Victor allegedly committed the crime on July 18 when registered as a Malawian citizen at Nkhotakota registration center.
The suspect went to Nkhotakota registration center where he registered as a citizen of the country, however some concerned citizen who got suspicious of the man tipped the police about the matter. He was later arrested, said Malimwe.
It is reported that the suspect willingly confessed that he had registered as a Malawian citizen since he had been living is the country for over five years.
I have stayed in Malawi for over five years but I do not have a citizenship card and a nationalized certificate, said Christopher.
The suspect is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of furnishing false information for registration contrary to section 43 (A) of National Registration Act.
