Scabies outbreak in Lilongwe haunts Diamphwe health center

Lilongwe: Management of Diamphwe health center in Lilongwe has expressed concern over increased cases of scabies that has overwhelmed the clinic in the provision of treatment; Malawi News Agency (Mana) has the details.

The Facility In-charge, Henry Kuzemba told Mana on Wednesday that the outbreak which was detected in August is hitting hard with dysentery coming second.

We are receiving twenty patients on daily basis diagnosed with scabies and the figures keep on increasing. The facility has therefore run out of Benzyl Application as we are waiting for the new orders to be supplied, Kuzemba said.

Diamphwe according to Kuzemba is the only reliable nearest health facility,

Established in 1988 Diamphwe stretches within the borders of Lilongwe and Dedza districts and caters for a population of 21,703.

However, Kuzemba said the facility is being used by a greater population than the official figures.

”We budget for our catchment area; unfortunately the experienced is the hospital has become a favorite of many people from Dedza who are flocking to the facility. This is a serious challenge which needs immediate attention,” he said.

He thanked Globe Fund through the Ministry of Health and Population Services for erecting a modern drug house, ‘Storage in Box’ facility which he said was spacious, but he appealed for an office space.

The whole facility does not have even a single computer so that we computerize our records for easy access otherwise paper files can easily miss making accountability impossible at times, the in-charge hinted.

Traditional Authority (TA) Mazengera said the situation was pathetic and asked relevant authorities to consider taking a speedy process of providing the drugs for the outbreak.

I have already mobilized Group Village Heads under my authority to ask people practice high levels of hygiene to avoid further spreading to other few areas not attacked yet.

Currently, we are in an awkward situation and we appeal for immediate support in order for the situation to be contained with speed, TA Mazengera said.
