Seven year-old child drowns in Lilongwe

Lilongwe, : A child in Lilongwe identified as Pempho Mwandira, 7 from Chikanda village Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba based in Lilongwe has drowned in a stream in Lilongwe, Area 18 near Life Changers Church.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) Friday, Lilongwe police spokesperson Kingsly Dandaula said the boy left home to play with his friends along Area 18- Gulliver road.

The victim with his friends went to play in course of playing the deceased jumped into a stream to swim but unfortunately he failed to come out and after noticing that he is not coming out his friends rushed to nearby house to report the case, he said.

Dandaula explained that members of the public rushed to the scene with efforts to retrieve the victim but it was too late.

He added that the body was taken to a private clinic called Medi Clinic where death was pronounced.

Currently dead body is at Kamuzu Central Hospital pending postmortem.

He concluded that as police they are advising parents to take care of their children by not letting them walk alone to such dangerous places with this rainy season.

Pempho is son to Gwirizanani Mwandira from Chikanda village Traditional Authority (TA), Chikowi in zomba, and is based in Area 49.
