Dedza: Silver Strikers Youth have emerged champions of the First Capital Bank under-20 league after beating Dedza Young Soccer 2-0 in a thrilling final at Dedza Stadium.
Rabson Pangani who has been the league’s top goal scorer gave silver strikers the lead in the 18th minute after he outpaced Dan Chimbalanga, a Dedza young soccer defender and the first half ended 1-0 in favour of the young bankers.
In the second half, it was Pangani again who put Dedza young soccer to the sword when he completed his brace after central defender of Young Soccer, Owen Twea failed to clear a ball and Pangani slotted it into an empty goal after he had dribbled past the goalkeeper.
Speaking in an interview with the Malawi News Agency after the game, the guest of honor, Timpuza Mwansambo who is the Director of Administration in the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development commended the First Capital Bank for sponsoring the league for 11 years.
This is an encouraging effort. We hope others will emulate their example and as government our doors are always open towards helping football in this country so that one day we should have a team that can be a force to reckon with on the international stage, he said.
The First Capital Bank started sponsoring the league in 2009 with K4 million but now they have raised the sponsorship to K30 million.
According to Brian Mungomo junior who is the Brand Manager at First Capital Bank, they are impressed with what they have achieved since they started sponsoring the league 11 years ago.
As a brand, we are very happy because our motto is enabling people achieve the extraordinary and we have seen that there are a lot of players who have graduated from this league and are now playing for super league teams as well as the national team, he said.
Mungomo has promised that the First Capital Bank will return even bigger next year while hinting at a possible international under-20 league which will involve teams from all countries where the bank operates like Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Botswana.
The champions, Silver Strikers Youth received K1.5 million together with gold medals and a cup while the runners up, Dedza Young Soccer walked away with K900,000 and silver medals.
Some of the graduates from the First Capital Bank under-20 league are Gerlard Phiri, Dalitso Sailesi, Rafick Namwera, Mike Mkwate, Haji Wali, Levison Maganizo and Chawanangwa Kaonga.
