Sim card registration to curb phone-aided crime, MACRA

Mzuzu: The Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says once the sim card registration process is fully operational in the country, it will help track down people who commit crimes using mobile phones.

The regulatory body said in addition to the Electronic Transactions Act which aims to fight criminal activities using the internet, sim card registration will foster the fight as people will be identified using their sim cards.

Speaking Tuesday in Mzuzu when the body launched a nationwide awareness campaign on sim card registration, the authority’s postal services manager Timothy Sukali said people who commit crimes using unidentified phone numbers and internet will be tracked down.

We have some people who commit crimes against others just because they are not identified using the internet or phones, so this new initiative to have phone numbers duly registered will help to trace them, he said.

He said, for example, some people use the social media like Facebook to publish hate material or nude pictures just because they know they cannot be easily known by the public.

Once one’s sim card is registered, service providers and other enforcement agencies will be able to know exactly who is behind such criminal activities hence ensuring sanity, he said.

National chairperson for the sim card registration exercise, Undule Mwakasungula said he has been a victim of cybercrime and hate messages using phones.

I have personally been criminally attacked on social media or phones by unknown people who have been threatening or insulting me.

I believe if people take this one in a positive sense, they will be helped as those behind hate messages will be known, he said.
