Lilongwe: St Michael’s girls Secondary School alumni have organised a fundraising dinner and dance to be held on Friday April 27, at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre the proceeds of which will be used in promoting girl child education,

St Michael’s Girls Secondary School (SMGSS) is one of the long time national girls’ secondary schools constructed at Malindi in Mangochi. Since its establishment, the school has graduated a lot of girls who are holding different positions both in government and the private sector.

The old adage says when you educate a woman you have educated the nation.

In a recent interview with the Malawi News Agency (Mana) SMGSS Alumni National coordinator, Tione Makawa said as one way of showing their love for girls’ education, they have organised a fundraising dinner and dance with a mission to help the school activities.

As St Michael’s Girls’ alumni we want to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the school premises and we are planning to use part of the funds to paint hostels, classroom blocks and repair broken window panes as well as rehabilitate sanitation facilities at the school, Makawa said.

She said the idea came in after receiving an appeal from the school authorities in which the school management indicated they were in dire need of support as it was in dilapidated condition hence coming hence the initiative.

The school authorities brought to our attention the sorry state the school is in during one of our visits which we usually make during graduation ceremonies; the authorities asked us to assist in rehabilitating the school, she said.

In addition to the school maintenance, the alumni shall also help needy students by paying school fees, buy groceries and other necessities as they have been doing in the past two years.

According to Makawa it is the first time for the alumni to organise such a fundraising event as most of the time they use the money from their pockets whenever they want to assist the school.

We have been relying on funds from the alumni only but this time around we have approached different organisations and we are receiving positive feedback that they will come in with their assistance, Makawa explained.

As compared to the past years, the school is really in dire state as most toilets are not working saying one of the hostels is abandoned because it was sinking, almost all the window panes are broken just to mention a few.

During the event there shall be auctioning of items to raise more funds and also variety shows organized by the alumni themselves.

SMGSS is appealing to all well-wishers to assist with cash donations even if they don’t attend the dinner, especially the corporate world.

The fee for the dinner and dance is K20, 000 per person and the expectations are to raise K5m from the event.
