Mzuzu: Mzuzu City Council (MCC) Chief Executive Officer, MaCloud Kadam’manja said ensuring vendors sell their merchandise in designated places is the responsibility of all stakeholders.
Kadam’manja was speaking recently during a consultative meeting that explored strategies to end illegal vending in Mzuzu City.
The meeting was attended by Malawi Police Service, vendors, MCC and Malawi Defence Force (MDF) representatives.
He said initiatives to move vendors that ply their trade between Mzuzu Main Market and Mzuzu- Karonga MI Road started way back but yielded nothing.
It’s the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure that vendors sell their merchandise in designated places. Don’t wait for MCC to do that. Maintaining sanity in this green city requires concerted efforts,” said Kadam’manja.
It was, therefore, suggested that the Main Market be expanded to accommodate all vendors in the central business area of the city.
Members at the meeting also agreed to institute, autonomous market committee which will be mandated to be resolving all issues to do with illegal vending.
In response, Kadam’manja said the MCC will weigh the suggested options and implement a suggestion which will be deemed feasible.
Mzuzu Flea Market Secretary, James Gondwe said vendors inside the market pay market fees while illegal vendors do not as such MCC loses revenue thereby compromising the council’s operations.
We, inside the market pay market fees yet a few customers come to buy our goods. Those operating outside don’t pay market fees, but have a lot of customers. Therefore, if the situation is not checked more people will in the long run embark on illegal vending.” Gondwe said.
